Description

Pompom yellow mimosa flowers are produced on this evergreen tree against a backdrop of feathery foliage. In spring the scented, nectar-rich blooms provide a valuable source of food for bees and other insects. Acacia dealbata will naturally form a single stemmed tree, but may be cut back while young to produce a multi-stemmed specimen for training against a warm, sunny wall. In mild parts of the UK, Acacia dealbata plants can be grown outdoors, making a brilliant specimen for sheltered borders. In frost prone areas grow acacia in containers, and move them to a frost free position in winter. Height: Up to 8m (26'). Spread: Up to 5m (16').

Please note: Small plants are vulnerable to frost damage, and should be kept in a frost free greenhouse or conservatory until all risk of frost has passed in late spring. Once acclimatised to outdoor conditions, they can be planted into their final positions.

How to Grow
Pot up plants in well drained compost and grow them on in frost free conditions. Mimosa plants become hardier with maturity and can tolerate temperatures of -10°C (14°F). In mild areas of the UK they may be planted outdoors in rich fertile, non-alkaline soil with good drainage, once they are well grown. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days prior to planting. Choose a very sheltered position in full sun - ideally against a south facing wall. In frost prone areas, grow acacia in large patio containers of loam based compost such as John Innes No. 2 that can be moved to a conservatory or greenhouse during winter.
More Info
Feed and water acacia plants regularly until they are fully established. With maturity acacia dealbata will develop good drought tolerance. Acacia dealbata will naturally form a single stemmed tree, but may be cut back while young to produce a multistemmed specimen for wall training. Mature Mimosa trees do not respond well to hard pruning but should be pruned lightly after flowering to maintain their shape and reduce their size if being in patio containers.
