Description
This elegant Silky Wisteria is so called for its downy leaflets along the main leaf stem. The long, pinnate leaves make a lovely backdrop for the lilac-pink, fragrant flowers that appear in late spring and early summer. Unlike the better know Chinese Wisteria, the individual flowers of this species are much larger, forming short, somewhat stumpy racemes - but equally showy. Wisteria brachybotrys 'Showa-beni' is a recent introduction with a distinctive yellow spot to the centre of each bloom. After flowering it forms bean-like seed pods which dangle from the branches. An excellent, vigorous climber for a large wall, or trained over a pergola. Height: to 12m (40'). Spread: 8m (26'). Supplied as a grafted plant.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow wisteria plants in a sunny or semi shaded site in any moist, well drained soil. Wisteria flower buds can be damaged by hard spring frosts so choose a sheltered position. Prior to planting add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil. Provide the twining stems with an appropriate and sturdy support, such as strong trellis or wires attached to walls and pergolas.Standard wisterias will especially need a sturdy support when grown to protect the head from damage by strong winds .
More Info
Feed and water regularly until fully established. In autumn or spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Prune wisteria in July and again in February. During the first two years, prune wisteria to create a framework of permanent stems. Tie in selected lateral shoots to sturdy supports and cut back unwanted growth. Once the desired framework has been created, continue pruning wisteria twice a year to contain the plants growth within its allotted space.
