Sowing
Akadama is a clay like mineral. It has great drainage properties which is ideal in a terrarium and becomes darker in colour when wet making it easy to see the amount of moisture within the terrarium. Moss makes a beautiful top layer to the Akadama and perfect for the fittonia plant to sit between. Some terrariums are used just to house moss. Fittonia - also called a Nerve Plant due to their contrasting veins on the leaves, these plants love the humidity and warmth of a terrarium setting. Fern - both the Nephrolepis Exalta and Asparagus Fern enjoy the terrarium environment We recommend a base of akadama with a surface angle getting on for 45 degrees. A level surface is fine, but an angle will give a slightly larger surface area and makes the beautiful moss carpet more of a feature. Long tweezers are recommended to place the plants and moss but due to the size of the opening it’s also easy to place these plants by hand. Some soil around the roots will help keep it in the akadama. The base of the moss can be trimmed off to create a thinner carpet, it can also be trimmed at an angle to raise one side of it if required. Moss doesn't have roots as such so it's fine cutting the brown underside. Placing the moss around the plants and over the roots will secure the plant. When finished gently pour in water, the water should be absorbed by the akadama leaving no pooling of water - the akadama helpfully turns darker in colour when wet.
