Description

The Kew Pollinators range of seeds from Thompson and Morgan has been specially created alongside the experts at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to attract and support a wide range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies and beetles, as well as a number of other important pollinating insects. Helping these pollinators to thrive is hugely important for our eco-system as a whole and these seeds, in their striking packaging inspired by artwork from the Kew archives, will help to create the environment which they need to thrive, with varieties chosen to help a wide range of pollinating insects, including some night flowering plants to help moths which also play an important part in our gardens.

Lathyrus latifolius is a charming perennial Sweet Pea which returns year after year. The purple-pink flowers are unscented, and may not be quite as showy as its annual cousins, but this resilient species will happily ramble about without becoming a nuisance in perennial borders. Ideal for decorating evergreen shrubs with a splash of colour, or sprawling down tricky slopes and embankments as quick-growing summer ground cover. Height: 200cm (79"). Spread: 100cm (39").

Sowing

Sow sweet pea seeds indoors in October for transplanting outdoors in spring, or direct sow outdoors from March to April.

For autumn sowings autumn, sow 3 seeds per 7.5cm (3") pot at a depth of 1cm (½") in free-draining, seed sowing compost. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a plastic bag at a temperature of 18-20C (65-70F) until germination which takes 7-21 days. Once germinated, grow sweet peas on in cooler conditions, before transferring to a cold frame for overwintering. Spring sowings can be made outdoors directly into drills at a depth of 2.5cm (1"), and a distance of 7.5cm (3") apart. Pinch out the growing points of each stem once the second pair of leaves has opened to encourage bushier growth.

In spring, plant out sweet peas at a distance of 23cm (9") apart in any well drained garden soil in full sun.

More Info
