Description

This collection includes fantastic varieties that are perfect for a long lasting colourful garden with a selection of which deserve a prime spot in the garden. The blooms of this collection are long-lasting and continue well into autumn and get stronger and larger each year. Undemanding and easy to grow, they're perfect for a floral display for years to come.

This superb collection is the easy route to a stunning bright and colourful garden. Plant these fabulous flowers in sunny borders for a colourful display that will last all summer long. These top quality plants will establish quickly, increasing in size and performance year after year.

Your collection will include the following varieties:

  • Agapanthus Blue & White Collection (6 bare root plants) - This magnificent mix combines blue Agapanthus 'Queen of the Ocean' and white Agapanthus 'Polar Ice' for a striking two tone display. In summer, these impressive perennials lend their stature to borders and patio containers, where their architectural seed heads continue the display well into autumn. The large spherical blooms are also magnificent in cut flower displays. Hardy in many parts of the UK, where good drainage and protective winter mulch is provided. Height: 120cm (47"). Spread: 60cm (24").
  • Begonia 'Apricot Shades Improved' F1 Hybrid (5 tubers) - delivers an abundance of flower power that will brighten your garden from July to October. The large, double blooms cascade from trailing stems in an impressive display. This versatile variety thrives in sun or shade, resisting our changeable summer weather with ease. Plant them in baskets, window boxes, flower pouches and containers – in fact anywhere that’s needs a bold splash of summer colour. Height: 30cm (12"). Spread: 45cm (18").
  • Dahlia 'Patio Choice' (10 tubers) - This semi-dwarf dahlia mix is perfect for bringing a splash of colour to the middle of borders, as well as your beds and containers. Enjoy vibrant semi-double blooms of pink, orange, yellow and red from midsummer right through to autumn. It has a neat, compact habit and strong, upright growth so they won’t require staking. Perfect for dotting through cottage garden borders or adding colour to exotic planting schemes. These long lasting blooms also make superb cut flowers. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 45cm (18").

How to Grow
Tubers are ideal for containers and baskets, making a larger plant in the first year than plug plants or growing from seed. From February, start tuberous begonias off in well-drained, moist compost in a warm, frost-free position in bright light. When planting begonia tubers, position them just below the compost surface with the indented side facing upwards. In hanging baskets the tubers can be planted at a 45 degree angle with their roots toward the centre, to encourage plants to cascade over the sides of the basket. When begonia plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days, before planting them in their final positions. Choose a sunny or semi shaded position that is protected from strong winds.

Grow Agapanthus plants in rich fertile, well drained soil, in a sunny position. When growing Agapanthus in patio containers use a soil based compost, such as John Innes No.3 .

Plant Dahlia tubers outdoors in April after all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position in moist well drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well rotted manure or compost. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6") and water well. Alternatively, start tubers into growth in pots of compost in a frost free greenhouse. Transplant them into their final positions outdoors in June.
More Info
Feed and water African Lilies regularly throughout the growing season. Leave faded Agapanthus flower stems intact to enjoy their architectural seed heads during autumn. When the first frost blacken the seed heads, cut the stems back to ground level. Protect plants outdoors from severe winter weather by providing a dry mulch of bark chips or straw in late autumn. Container grown plants can be moved to a frost free position over winter. Divide agapanthus clumps in spring when they become over crowded.

Feed and water dahlias regularly throughout the growing season. While dahlia plants are still young, pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage bushier growth and masses of flowers. Deadhead faded dahlia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. Bedding dahlia are generally grown as annuals, however dahlia tubers may be lifted in autumn and stored over winter in trays of peat or sand, in a cool but frost free position if required. They can be potted up the following spring.
