Description

Streptocarpus ‘Sphinx’ bears dramatic dark purple veining on the lower petals contrasting with delicate lavender on the upper petals. Height: 30cm (12in). Spread: 35cm (14in).

Exceptionally long flowering and easy to grow, Streptocarpus are one of the most rewarding houseplants. Clusters of exotic-looking blooms rise on slender stems above rosettes of wrinkled green leaves. Flowering can last for up to 9 months, and the blooms come in an endless array of vibrant shades and colour combinations. They create a superb focal point on a bright windowsill or in the conservatory, providing masses of colourful blooms from April to October. Striking good looks and an easy-going nature make this Cape Primrose a perfect gift for beginners and seasoned growers alike.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow

March to September

Place your Streptocarpus in a bright spot in indirect light out of the midday sun. Do not expose to hot, direct sunlight. An east or west-facing windowsill is perfect. About once a week water sparingly when the compost begins to dry out, keeping plants on the dry side. Never leave them to sit in water. Overwatering can be fatal. Feed weekly with a high potash tomato feed which will boost flower production. Deadhead faded flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. As the plant grows, repot as necessary in spring into a slightly larger pot.

October to February

Move to a south facing windowsill if possible. Keep drier over the winter, only watering occasionally and sparingly when the compost dries out. Don’t feed. Remove any dead leaves and debris to minimise the chance of pests and diseases.

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
