Bring a touch of tropical paradise into the home with this imposing banana-like houseplant. Known as the ‘Giant Bird of Paradise’, Strelizia nicolai really strikes a pose with tall, erect stems, holding aloft large, paddle-like leaves. It makes a fabulous statement plant for a sunny conservatory or room where it will grow into a large and impressive specimen with an intoxicating jungle vibe! Maximum height and spread: 3m (10ft).

Please note: This Strelizia is grown predominantly for its foliage rather than flowers as it does not reliably flower indoors.

How to Grow

Grow in bright, indirect light, avoiding direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves. Prefers to be kept in a warm room between 21-28°C although will tolerate temperatures down to 13°C. During the growing season, keep the soil moist watering when the top 4-5cm of soil has become dry and apply liquid fertiliser every 2-3 weeks. In winter, ease off watering and keep on the dry side. Please note, the leaves of this plant naturally split and tear as part of the ageing process. This Strelizia is shy to flower indoors and is grown predominantly for its handsome foliage.
