Description

Skimmia japonica ‘Exstase’ is a male variety bred especially for its abundant, large panicles of attractive dark red winter buds that retain their colour for much longer than other varieties. The buds open into fragrant white flowers in April-May that provide a valuable early food source for pollinators.

One of the Gold Series®, this Skimmia features a strong root system and greater resistance to pests. It forms a dense, spherical plant composed of dark green, leathery, slightly wavy leaves. Naturally compact, this low-maintenance shrub only reaches about a metre high and does not require any pruning. A reliable foundation shrub for borders or containers, thriving in shady spots and providing all-year-round colour and interest. Plant Skimmia japonica ‘Exstase’ alongside a female variety so you can enjoy both flowers and berries. Height and spread: 1m (39in).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Skimmia plants in a dappled or fully shaded position, in moderately fertile, rich, well drained soil which can be neutral to acidic in pH. Avoid full sun, as this can cause yellowing of the leaves. Alternatively grow Skimmia in large containers, using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3 mixed with ericaceous (acidic) compost.
More Info
Skimmia plants will require very little pruning. After flowering, trim them lightly to keep a good shape, and remove any dead or damaged growth.
