Understated and refined, Rhododendron 'Hachmann's Porzellan' makes an outstanding specimen shrub, blending effortlessly with other spring flowering plants. In May, a fine display of white, bell-shaped blooms is born in clusters. Each flower is delicately marked with gold-green freckles at the centre that catches the eye, even at a distance. This bushy, well branched Yakushimanum hybrid is clothed in glossy, dark foliage with felted undersides. Low maintenance and evergreen, Rhododendron 'Hachmann's Porzellan' is perfect for growing in acid borders or as a stand-alone specimen. Height and spread: 120cm (48").

Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.
Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
