Description

A fern which comes from the jungle - Pteris umbrosa has a distinctive, tropical appearance. Originating in the rainforests of Australia, Pteris umbrosa is an exceptionally elegant species with bright green, ribbon-like fronds held on slim stems, creating a cascade of airy foliage.

This half hardy, evergreen fern makes a lovely specimen for a sheltered terrace, courtyard or coastal garden where it will be protected from frost, or grown in a summer container and brought under cover over winter. It can also be grown indoors as a houseplant. Height: 40cm (16in). Spread: 30cm (12in).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow

This half hardy fern can withstand temperatures down to -5°C (23°F). Grow in a summer container that can be brought under cover over winter, or in the open border in coastal/mild parts of the UK in a position where it will be protected from frost. Pteris umbrosa is also suitable for growing indoors as a houseplant.

Grow in partial shade in fertile, acid or neutral soil in a position that is reliably moist and cool. Ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting. Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established.
