Description

Unlike many other ferns, Polystichum setiferum ‘Herrenhausen’ will tolerate drier soils where other ferns fail, making it very valuable for woodland borders under shrubs and trees. The fronds unfurl into fine lacy foliage which lies horizontally, creating lovely rosettes. Its evergreen leaflets provide all year round groundcover and although the fronds get tatty by the end of the winter, the old fronds can simply be snipped off, making way for blankets of spring bulbs such as woodland anemones and daffodils and then usefully covering their fading flowers with fresh green leaflets. Its perfect for spring-themed borders and pots, associating well with spotty pulmonarias, hostas and foxgloves. Height and Spread: 60cm (24”).

How to Grow
Plant ferns in a sheltered spot. Choose a cool position semi-shade or dappled shade on fertile, moist, acid or neutral, soil. Hardy ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting.
More Info
Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established. Apply mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around the crown of each plant in spring.
