From Thompson & Morgan’s renowned breeding programme comes this truly astounding development in nasturtiums! Not only do the summer flowers resemble exotic-looking orchids, they also change colour. This colour switch needs to be seen to be believed! If you keep a close watch on the blooms – check them every few days - their colouring develops from red with yellow splashes and veining, to fully yellow. The yellow colouring seems to creep further and further across the bloom, creating a profusion of unique patterns. The final flower colour depends on weather and temperature, but no two flowers will be exactly alike – each one is an individual masterpiece!
This exclusive annual nasturtium is an annual, mounding up to about 30cm (12in) high and then spreading or cascading to 90-120cm (3-4ft) so it’s a great variety for hanging baskets or growing over trellis. Quick growing, Nasturtium ‘Orchid Flame’ produces masses of bright colour all summer long and won’t run rampant like some other varieties.
Nasturtium plants make a great addition to the garden, but also to the vegetable patch where they’ll attract bees and repel many destructive pests, particularly around brassicas. Some gardeners find that they can also act as a useful barrier to pests when planted around tomato and cucumber plants. Height 30cm (12"). Trailing: 120cm (4').
Culinary information: The peppery flavour of the leaves and colourful flowers will enrich salads and the unripe seeds can used like capers – delicious combined with cream cheese or butter in canapés. For more details about edible flowers click here.
