Description

A handsome evergreen with attractive foliage and pretty flowers that holds a secret surprise!

Myrtus ugni ‘Flambeau’ forms a slow-growing, dense, rounded shrub with leathery, pointed leaves, variegated cream, green and pink. The foliage is wonderfully fragrant when crushed. In late spring and summer, small white and pink, bell-shaped flowers dangle prettily from long stalks. These are followed by purple-red fruits that are set off beautifully by the background foliage colour. But you might not be admiring them for too long – because pop one of these berries into your mouth and you will probably be hooked! Tasting like no other fruit, the flavour of these juicy, aromatic berries is variously described as strawberry, blueberry and sherbert ! They are delicious eaten fresh but you can also use them for jams, cakes and even flavoured gins.

This attractive ornamental edible can be grown in a warm sheltered border or in a sunny container, allowing it to be easily moved into a sheltered spot over winter. Height: 1.5m (59in). Spread: 1m (39in).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow

Pot up your Chilean Guava and grow on in frost free conditions. When plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for a period of 7 to 10 days.

Transplant your shrub into borders and containers outdoors in moist, well-drained soil. Choose a warm position in full sun with shelter from cold, drying winds. A south-facing border, sunny patio or sheltered wall is ideal. When growing in containers use a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3.

Although hardy in most areas, in more northerly gardens or in very harsh winters it is recommended that frost protection such as fleecing is provided. Chilean Guava grows very happily in a pot in which case it can be brought into the greenhouse or conservatory over the winter if needed.

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
