Description

A fabulous new banana for 2023! Musa ‘Ever Red’ sports huge, ribbed, paddle-shaped leaves, the dark green foliage streaked with maroon-red stripes. With maturity, this fast-growing banana will develop a woody stem, creating a dramatic, architectural centrepiece for a tropical planting scheme.

Originating in the foothills of the Himalayas, this Musa rivals Musa basjoo for hardiness and its thicker, stronger leaves are more windproof and more colourful and hardier than sikkimensis Bengal Tiger. ‘Ever Red’retains its red leaf colour for longer during the summer in comparison to Bengal Tiger.

Plants will thrive outdoors in mild areas if given some protection or they can be grown in containers and moved into a frost-free position over winter. Height and spread: 3-4m (10-13ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
In very mild areas, grow Musa in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, with shelter from strong winds. Protect the trunk with fleece, straw or hessian over winter. However, even in mild areas, young plants should not be overwintered outdoors. In frost prone areas, Banana plants are best grown in containers of soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3, which can be moved to a warm, frost-free greenhouse or conservatory in winter.
More Info
Feed weekly and water regularly throughout the growing season in spring and summer. Reduce watering in autumn, allowing the compost to partially dry out. As temperatures begin to fall, move container grown plants to a warm conservatory or greenhouse, and maintain a minimum temperature of 5C (41F). Plants grown outdoors should be wrapped with a protective layer of straw and hessian to protect them from cold winter weather.
