These poppies are best sown directly into the ground in autumn or spring. Prepare the soil well by digging it over and raking it to a fine tilth, removing any large stones or debris. Scatter the seed thinly over the ground and water with a fine rose. Once germination commences, progressively thin out seedlings in stages to 20-30cm apart.
Alternatively, they can be sown indoors but this method is more challenging. The seeds will require cold stratification and poppies resent root disturbance and so are best sown in modules or pricked out within the first 7 days of emergence. When sowing, only cover the seed with a very light dusting of compost or vermiculite. Germination can be slow. After sowing, seal the container in a polythene bag and leave at 60-65F (15-18C) for 2 weeks, then place in a refrigerator (not freezer) for 3-6 weeks. After this return to the recommended germination temperature. If germination does not occur in 6-10 weeks return to the fridge for a further 3-6 weeks. Examine regularly whilst in the fridge and remove immediately if the seeds show signs of germinating.
