Description

A showy flowering shrub with evergreen foliage, repeat blooming and a bounty of nectar for bees.

Leptospermum scoparium ‘Red Damask’ is a medium-sized shrub with arching shoots carrying small, narrow, deep green foliage. The leaves are pleasantly aromatic when crushed and contain oils with antibacterial properties that were traditionally used by the M?oris.

Through late spring and summer, the arching branches are studded with jewel-like buds, soon becoming generously smothered in long-lasting, fully double, deep cerise flowers. The flowers are rich in pollen and nectar making Leptospermum a star bee plant. Honeybees and some short-tongued bumblebees and solitary bees are attracted to the blooms and it is from Leptospermum that Manuka honey comes.

Leptospermum scoparium enjoys freely drained soil and a sheltered site in mild and coastal parts of the UK. It makes a good choice for a gravel garden, wall side border or courtyard and is compact enough to be grown in a large container on a patio that can be moved into a sheltered position over winter. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Borderline hardy, suitable for growing in mild and coastal parts of the UK. Height and spread: 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft).
