Description

The Kew Pollinators range of seeds from Thompson and Morgan has been specially created alongside the experts at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to attract and support a wide range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies and beetles, as well as a number of other important pollinating insects. Helping these pollinators to thrive is hugely important for our eco-system as a whole and these seeds, in their striking packaging inspired by artwork from the Kew archives, will help to create the environment which they need to thrive, with varieties chosen to help a wide range of pollinating insects, including some night flowering plants to help moths which also play an important part in our gardens.

Whether you are creating a herb garden, planting a wildlife area or bulking up herbaceous borders – there should always be space for some Hyssop! This aromatic shrubby herb has a multitude of culinary and medicinal uses, adding a tang to meat dishes or salads, and flavouring teas. It is loved by pollinating insects too, and also makes an attractive low hedge, with foliage that remains semi-evergreen in mild areas.

Hyssopus officinalis 'Tricolour Mixed' is a pretty blend producing purple, pink and white flowers from midsummer to autumn, which rise upwards upon short flower spikes. With so much to offer, this versatile herb is well worth finding a sunny spot for. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 100cm (39").

Sowing

Sow hyssop seeds indoors or under glass from April to May. Sow seed in pots or trays on the surface of barely moist seed compost. Do not cover the seed or exclude light as this will aid germination. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 15-20C (59-68F) or seal inside a clear polythene bag until germination which takes 14 - 21 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3") pots and grow on in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise Hyssop plants to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before planting outdoors. Plant Hyssop at a distance of 60cm (24") apart on any well drained or chalky soil in full sun. Hyssop thrives in drier soils.

More Info
Once established Hyssop requires little aftercare, and only occasional watering during particularly dry periods. Harvest leaves as and when required.
