Description

This impressively free-flowering Hydrangea blooms non-stop from mid-June until September, when it is smothered in pink or blue lacecap flowers. Hydrangea serrata ‘Veerle’ is one of the hardiest of varieties, making it well-suited to northern gardens and more exposed sites. This easy and robust shrub readily earns its place in the garden, rewarding with a second season of interest in the autumn when the foliage blazes red and orange.

If you are looking for an informal hedge which is a little bit different from the usual choices, Hydrangea ‘Veerle’ looks stunning in mass plantings, providing a ribbon of colour over a long season. Compact and dense, it works equally well in a container or as a specimen shrub in a flowerbed. Height and Spread: 120cm (47in).

Note that the flower colour of your Hydrangea will depend upon your soil pH with blue tones dominating in soils with a pH of 7 or less and pink tones in soils above pH 7. For the deepest blue flowers right through the season we recommend the use of Hydrangea Colourant.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Hydrangea serrata prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea serrata in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
More Info

Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. In early spring, dead head the old flowers, cutting them back to a pair of healthy buds just below.

In late winter or early spring remove one or two of the oldest stems to the base. This will encourage the development of new, replacement shoots and keep the shrub productive.

After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: Contact with hydrangea foliage may irritate the skin and eyes and all parts are harmful if eaten.
