Description

This compact Hydrangea makes a fabulous floral hedge, offering a showy and disease-free alternative to low-growing box hedging. Hydrangea macrophylla 'Hortbux' comes from US breeding for a free-flowering variety that produces an abundance of mophead blooms from late spring to autumn. Better still, it is naturally compact, remaining less than 50cm (20") with maturity. If you need a lower hedge then it will respond well to pruning without compromising on flowers!

Like many Hydrangeas, ‘Hortbux’ will vary in colour depending upon the soil pH value. In more acid soils the flower colour will be mauve-blue, whilst alkaline soils produce pink flowers. This hardy deciduous shrub is a versatile choice for hedging or planted in patio pots as individual specimens. With such a compact habit, it will fit into the smallest of gardens! Height and spread: 50cm (20").

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

The blue flowers will take on a pink hue as they fade through autumn and may also be affected by alkaline tap water or soil. For the deepest blue flowers right through the season we recommend the use of Hydrangea Colourant

How to Grow
Hydrangea macrophylla prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea macrophylla in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
More Info
Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: Contact with hydrangea foliage may irritate the skin and eyes and all parts are harmful if eaten.
