Description

Noteworthy for its unique bicolour blooms and long flowering time, Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Bavaria’ is bound to impress. From mid summer onwards, huge mophead flower clusters form at the end of every branch, creating a dense, bright display. The blooms are a dreamy shade of lavender blue, each petal is frosted with a contrasting white edge. The blooms remain consistent throughout the summer months, as they fade in autumn the leaves develop a mottling or red blotches before falling. Perfect for brightening up a dull spot, this Hydrangea will be happiest in a partially shaded area of the garden in soil which stays cool and moist most of the time. Depending on the acidity of your soil, the blooms can become more mauve or pink over time. Height and spread: 1.2m (4’).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

The blue flowers will take on a pink hue as they fade through autumn and may also be affected by alkaline tap water or soil. For the deepest blue flowers right through the season we recommend the use of Hydrangea Colourant

How to Grow
Hydrangea macrophylla prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea macrophylla in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
More Info
Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: Contact with hydrangea foliage may irritate the skin and eyes and all parts are harmful if eaten.
