Description

Hostas are instantly recognisable for their large, rounded leaves. These three varieties are particularly showy, forming dense clumps of colourful foliage. Over time they will spread to create weed-smothering ground cover. These hardy perennials thrive in lightly shaded areas of the garden, either in borders or patio containers.

Hosta 'Giant Leaved Mix' comprises:

  • 2 x Hosta sieboldiana var. elegans - Architectural, blue-green foliage, which is great for the shaded end of cottage garden borders. Height: 100cm (39"). Spread: 120cm (48").
  • 2 x Hosta 'Frances Williams' - The crinkled, blue-green leaves are edged with golden margins that make a pleasing contrast. Height: 30cm (12"). Spread: 75cm (29").
  • 2 x Hosta ‘Olive Bailey Langdon’ – Large, corrugated blue-green leaves with wide golden margins that resist sun scorch. Height: 75cm (29"). Spread: 120cm (48").

How to Grow
Grow Hosta plants in sun or dappled shade, on rich, moist, well-drained soil. Plants can grow well in a sunny border, but will need to be kept reliably moist. Plants may perform better on slightly acid soils. Before planting, work some fresh compost or general fertiliser into the top 20cm of the soil. Alternatively plant Hostas in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. The growth points of most bare root perennials should be set about an inch below the soil surface. New growth will appear in spring.

More Info
In autumn, remove old foliage and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Lift and divide Hosta plants in autumn every third year to maintain their vigour.
