Description

Grown for their decorative foliage, Hostas make superb ground cover. These hardy perennials form dense mounds of foliage in a multitude of shapes and colours, which are complimented by upright flower spikes in summer. Perfect for lightly shaded areas where they will appreciate some protection from the midday sun. Mass them together in generous clumps for a spectacular display in perennial borders, or plant them into patio containers as individual specimens. Keep slugs under control and these resilient, easy-grow, hardy perennials will reward you with a show of fresh colourful foliage each spring, lasting right through to autumn.

Collection comprises:

Hosta 'Francee' - Tough and weatherproof with foliage that is deeply ribbed and edged in jagged, cream margins. Height: 55cm (22"). Spread: 100cm (39").

Hosta 'September Sun' - Golden leaves with irregular dark green margins that still look good towards the end of summer. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 100cm (39").

Hosta 'Marmalade on Toast' - Corrugated, heart shaped, blue-green foliage with gently wavy margins. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 100cm (39").

Hosta 'Brim Cup' - Compact variety with dark green foliage edged in a broad, creamy-white margin. Height: 30cm (12"). Spread: 60cm (24").

Hosta 'Frances Williams' - Relatively slug resistant with blue-green foliage and bright golden margins. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 100cm (39").

Culinary note: The best part to use is the hoston, the rolled up leaf as it emerges in the spring. Cooking depends on the size of the hostons, small ones can be fried for a few minutes, going well in stir fries. Thicker ones are better boiled and used as a vegetable. How to Grow
Grow Hosta plants in sun or dappled shade, on rich, moist, well-drained soil. Plants can grow well in a sunny border, but will need to be kept reliably moist. Plants may perform better on slightly acid soils. Before planting, work some fresh compost or general fertiliser into the top 20cm of the soil. Alternatively plant Hostas in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. The growth points of most bare root perennials should be set about an inch below the soil surface. New growth will appear in spring.

More Info
In autumn, remove old foliage and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Lift and divide Hosta plants in autumn every third year to maintain their vigour.
