Sowing

Sow on the surface of a good seed compost in spring/early summer. Make sure the compost is moist but not wet and seal in a polythene bag until after germination which usually takes 12-21 days at 15-21C (65-75F). Do not exclude light which is beneficial to germination. Transplant when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots and grow on in cooler conditions. Plant out 38cm (15in) apart in well cultivated garden soil and some shelter.

They can also be sown in mid summer in shallow drills, overwintered in a coldframe and planted out in spring 60cm (24in) apart. This produces larger plants and is recommended if the soil is heavy or badly drained.

More Info
Feed and water regularly until hollyhocks are fully established. Support their tall stems with bamboo canes as the flower spikes develop. In autumn, cut back the old foliage and faded hollyhock flower stems, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant.
