Description

Globe Artichokes are grown for their tasty, rounded flower heads which are harvested before they bloom. If left unharvested, the spectacular thistle-like blooms make an impressive display and attract throngs of bees to the garden. These majestic perennials reach imposing heights and boast attractive silvery foliage – a showy display for the back of a sunny border! Find them a permanent position in flower borders or the kitchen garden, where they will return bigger and better each year. Height: 180cm (71"). Spread: 75cm (30").

Globe Artichoke Duo comprises:

  • Globe Artichoke 'Purple Globe' - An eye-catching crop of rounded heads with a delicious flavour.
  • Globe Artichoke ‘Green Globe’ – Large, heavy and consistent quality globe-shaped heads.

How to Grow
Grow globe artichoke plants in rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun with protection from strong winds. Prepare the soil in early spring by adding plenty of well rotted garden compost to the soil to improve its structure and fertility. Plant globe artichokes at a distance of 75cm (30”) apart. Water the plants in well after planting.
More Info
Cover young globe artichoke plants with fleece to protect them from late frosts. When growing globe artichokes, provide a thick mulch of organic matter around the base of the plants to help conserve moisture and reduce weed growth. Throughout summer, water globe artichokes regularly, particularly during dry periods. Harvest globe artichokes from July, before the scales open, while the buds are plump. Globe artichokes will produce good crops for several seasons but are best replaced after 3 years to maintain vigour and crop yields.
