Description

Few foliage plants can rival hardy ferns for their understated elegance and beauty. This collection of evergreen species are perfect for creating a leafy woodland feel in a lightly shaded corner. Plant them among bluebells and other woodland favourites to add a splash of colour. Let them mingle and spread naturally to create year round ground cover. These hardy ferns are low maintenance and very easy to establish.

Fern Hardy Collection comprises:

  • Asplenium scolopendrium (Hart’s Tongue Fern) – A tough evergreen species that will quickly spread to form natural looking colonies. Height and spread: 60cm (24").
  • Dryopteris erythrosora (Japanese Shield Fern) – Semi-evergreen fern producing airy, coppery-pink fronds that mature to light green. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 40cm (16").
  • Polystichum proliferum (Mother Shield Fern) – A striking evergreen species with long, elegant fronds. Height and spread: 90cm (36").

How to Grow
Plant ferns in a sheltered spot. Choose a cool position semi-shade or dappled shade on fertile, moist, acid or neutral, soil. Hardy ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting.
More Info
Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established. Apply mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around the crown of each plant in spring.
