Description
A perfect architectural plant for shady locations in the garden. This low maintenance hardy fern unfurls fresh new fronds each spring to create shape and contrast in borders and containers, standing well into winter. The scarlet red stems and fresh green foliage on each frond bring a new colour to the popular Japanese Painted Fern. Mix in with floral displays to break up colour or use as a stand-alone statement plant, better still plant as a collection with other varieties in our Fern 'Fantastic' range. Height and spread: 60cm (24").

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Pot up ferns in and grow them on in a shaded, frost free situation until large enough to plant in their final positions outdoors. When plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise Japanese Painted Ferns to outdoor conditions for 7 to 10 days before planting them out in borders or containers. Plant athyrium in sheltered, dappled shade in fertile, moist, acid or neutral, soil. Athyrium ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting.
More Info
Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established. Apply mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around the crown of each plant in spring.
