A ’living fossil’ from the Jurassic jungle, Equisetum japonicum is an impressive and versatile aquatic plant that can be grown in ponds, patio containers and even indoors. It forms dense clumps of strongly erect, leafless, bamboo-like stems barred with striking green and black bands. The hollow stems are evergreen, providing height, colour and architectural structure throughout the year.
This versatile plant is suitable for shallow pond margins, patio troughs or even as a houseplant, providing it is kept continually moist.
Not to be confused with invasive Equisetum weed species, Equisetum japonicum will not take over your garden although it is best contained in a pond basket.
Height: 100-120cm (39-47in). Spread: 50cm (20in). Planting depth: up to 15cm (6in) above the crown.
Equisetum japonicum Pond Kit (Dry Mix) comprises the following:
Show Codes
1 x Pond Kit (Dry Mix) (KF8621)
1 x Patio Pond Kit + Black & Gold Pot (KF9044)
1 x Patio Pond Kit + Caesar Marble Pot (KF9051)
1 x Patio Pond Kit + Caesar Concrete Pot (KF9059)
Grow in the shallow margins of a pond at a depth of 0-15cm in sun or light shade. This tender perennial is not winter hardy so remove the plant from the pond and overwinter in a greenhouse, cold frame or sheltered, frost free place.
Planting instructions: Empty the soil mix into the aquatic planting basket, and plant the bareroots so that the growing point sits just below the soil surface. Cover the surface of the soil with the gravel to hold the compost in place. It is recommended that the planting basket is gently submerged in a bucket of water to allow the compost to become completely soaked through. This will allow any loose compost to float to the surface before you position it in your pond.
