Description

Curcuma ‘Healthy Joy’ is a rarely seen tropical tuberous perennial that can be grown as a summer patio pot plant or houseplant. Known as the Siam tulip, this flamboyant plant is native to Laos, Thailand and Cambodia. An inedible relative of ginger and turmeric, it is grown for its colourful bracts.

Curcuma ‘Healthy Joy’ is distinguished by the exceptional colour of its bracts which are rose-pink with deeper magenta blotches on the tips of each bract. These vivid bracts are held aloft on strong upright stems giving them the appearance of glowing pink torches. The bracts are surrounded by erect, lance-shaped leaves, creating a dramatic and architectural plant which makes an eye-catching focal specimen, injecting dynamism and tropical colour into larger houseplant arrangements or amongst patio containers.

Despite their exotic looks, curcuma tubers are no more difficult to grow than frost-tender begonias and dahlias. Start them into growth in early spring on a warm windowsill or in the greenhouse for months of summer colour on the patio. Bring them in before the first autumn frost and let them continue blooming through winter on a warm windowsill. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread 30cm (12").

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Curcuma in bright indirect light, well away from direct sunlight. Avoid positioning this plant close to cold draughts and radiators. Maintain an average room temperature of 15-25°C. During active growth, allow the top 2 inches of compost to dry out between waterings and feed every 2-3 weeks with liquid tomato feed. This houseplant appreciates high humidity so place the pot on a pebble tray half filled with water. Plants can be grown outside in patio containers for the summer and brought indoors before the first frosts.
More Info
Plants enter dormancy from late summer through to early spring. Keep the roots pot-bound to induce stress. Reduce the room temperature down by about 5? but do not allow temperatures to drop below 15°C as this can damage the plant. Reduce watering and keep the plant on the dry side. Each stem only flowers once so the previous year’s stems will wither and die. New stems will develop from the base in spring and will bloom within the same season.
