Quite spectacular in autumn! Heavy crops of glowing, golden fruits fill the branches of this attractive, deciduous tree. Malus ‘Butterball’ is a compact, small tree with an attractive spreading habit, making an unmissable focal point in the garden. The dark green foliage takes turns to orange and gold in autumn, providing a colourful backdrop for its ripening fruits.
It is equally attractive in spring when the branches are decorated with pretty, pink-flushed buds that open to white blossom. A superb specimen tree and a good pollinator for many eating apples. The fruits provide a valuable source of food for wild birds and can also be used to make crab apple jelly. Height: 5m (16’). Spread: 4m (13’).
Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. For more details about edible flowers click here.
Generally crab apples are too tart to eat raw, but their apple flavour becomes intense when cooked. Cab apples have high pectin content great for jam and jellies, and are a perfect ingredient for chutneys.
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
