Description

Also known as ‘Hall’s Giant’, the Giant in the name refers to the large-sized nuts and heavy bearing nature of this fruiting variety of cob nut, rather than its overall size. Corylus ‘Merveille De Bollwiller’ is actually a usefully compact variety, reaching only about 3m. It’s an old, late-season cultivar originating in France, that produces high yields of medium to large, glossy brown nuts. Although the nuts are not as large as some modern varieties they are noted for their excellent flavour. They are ready to harvest in October and can be eaten fresh or stored for later use. Attractive, pendulous yellow catkins hang from bare branches in late winter providing additional interest and an early source of food for pollinators. Partially self-fertile, Corylus ‘Merveille De Bollwiller’ produces the best crops when it has at least one different pollination partner including wild hazel. It is a good pollinator of other varieties. Height and spread: 3m (10ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
When growing Cobnuts, choose a sheltered position on moist, slightly acid, well drained soil in sun or semi shade. Prior to planting Hazelnut trees, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Cobnut trees at the same soil level as they were growing at the nursery, and water well to settle the soil.
More Info

Nut trees do not suffer weed competition well, so keep weeds and grass clear from within a 30cm radius of base of the tree. Water young trees during particularly dry periods until fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the tree. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer.

Hazelnuts are usually grown as open centred bushes on a short main stem of about 45cm (18"). Prune Hazelnut stems back by half immediately after planting. Select 3 or 4 laterals to form a main framework and remove all other laterals that are not required. In following years repeat this process each February until an open framework of 6 to 8 strong branches has been achieved. Once the main framework has been created Hazelnuts can be pruned each February while the plant is in flower to help disperse pollen for an improved crop. Prune the strongest leaders back by half and reduce the strongest laterals to 3 or 4 buds.

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
