Description

The darkest Cornus, ‘Nightfall’ offers all-year interest with colourful foliage throughout the growing season plus striking winter stems. The foliage of Cornus alba ‘Nightfall’ is dark green in spring but gradually deepens to dark purple, becoming almost black by autumn. The undersides of the leaf have a silvery-grey sheen that forms a striking contrast with the dark foliage and rich red stems. In autumn, the leaves deliver a stunning display of autumn colour before falling to reveal a slender framework of deep red stems that provide interest throughout winter. This easy-to-grow shrub makes a fine background specimen for a mixed border where its foliage can be used to highlight flower colours. It also looks stunning grown in groups, especially reflected in water. With a fast-growing, upright habit, it serves as an excellent hedging plant. Height and spread: 1.5m (5ft).

How to Grow
Plant Dogwood into garden borders in any moist, well drained garden soil. Grow in full shade or part shade, neutral to acid soil. Cornus can also tolerate damp soils or an exposed position.
More Info
To encourage plenty of colourful stems, Dogwood will need regular pollarding in early spring. Cut back all Dogwood stems to 3 buds above soil level or to a permanent low framework. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or other organic matter around the base of the plant after this pruning. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
