Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom' is an immensely popular variety for its sweet almond fragrance that fills the air in late winter to spring - long before most plants dare to bloom! The long, stems are cloaked in leathery, dark green foliage with a glossy sheen. New growth emerges bronze making a pretty contrast with its early blooms. This vigorous evergreen climber is best grown in a sheltered spot away from strong winds. Given plenty of space to grow, it will need little maintenance, and quickly covers unsightly fences, walls or outbuildings. Height: 5m (15’). Spread: 3m (10’). Pruning group: 1

Pot up clematis plants and grow them on until large enough to plant in their final positions. When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3") below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train Clematis armandii plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a large pergola.
Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. This variety of clematis flowers in early spring on the previous year's growth. Pruning should be undertaken in summer, after flowering. When pruning Clematis armandii, remove any damaged or dead stems entirely before cutting back the remaining stems to a pair of healthy buds to maintain the plant within it's alloted space. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture.
