Chilean Guava 'KA-POW' is a fruiting shrub which will explode your taste buds! Bred in the UK and named by James Wong, this berrying shrub is totally unique, bursting with strawberry, spice, mint and bubble-gum flavours. Not only will it delight you with its wonderful fruit, but it is also an attractive ornamental shrub in its own right, providing varied interest throughout the year. Chilean Guava 'KA-POW' is an evergreen shrub from Chile related to the myrtle with small, deep green leaves which when crushed are intensely aromatic. In late spring it produces pinkish-white, bell-shaped flowers which are sweetly fragrant and attractive to pollinating insects. These are followed in autumn by deep red fruit, similar to blueberries, which smell fabulous. For the best flavour, resist their delicious aroma and wait for the fruit to fully ripen in late autumn and early winter before harvesting.
Despite being Queen Victoria's favourite fruit, the Chilean Guava is rarely seen in the UK and if you are after something really unusual which will make your friends curious, this fruiting shrub is definitely one to try. A low maintenance shrub, it is hardy in most areas of the UK provided it is given a warm, sunny and sheltered position away from cold winds. Height: 1.5m (5'). Spread: 1m (3').
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Pot up your Chilean Guava and grow on in frost free conditions. When plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for a period of 7 to 10 days.
Transplant your shrub into borders and containers outdoors in moist, well-drained soil. Choose a warm position in full sun with shelter from cold, drying winds. A south-facing border, sunny patio or sheltered wall is ideal. When growing in containers use a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
Although hardy in most areas, in more northerly gardens or in very harsh winters it is recommended that frost protection such as fleecing is provided. Chilean Guava grows very happily in a pot in which case it can be brought into the greenhouse or conservatory over the winter if needed.
