Description

This trio of new Callistemon varieties features compact growth, evergreen winter foliage, fabulously exotic flowers and improved winter hardiness. It also includes the unusual yellow-flowered 'Honeypot' and the wonderful 'Inferno' which explodes into fiery orange tints in the autumn.

Callistemon are valued for their long display of unusual bottlebrush flowers and elegant, arching branches which can be left to form a bushy shrub or trained up trellis to create a stunning wall specimen. Their stiff, evergreen, narrow foliage provides valuable winter interest and is highly aromatic, emitting a lemon scent when crushed.

Callistemon Trio comprises the following varieties:

  • Callistemon 'Amarette' - Well-branching and compact habit with lots of short, jointed growth which means even more lovely red-pink bottlebrush flowers. It also features excellent winter hardiness down to -12C. Height and spread: 90 to 120cm (3-4 feet).
  • Callistemon 'Honeypot' - Offering a banquet for bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators, ‘Honey Pot’ is also a feast for the eyes, featuring unusual yellow bottlebrush flowers and aromatic evergreen foliage. Excellent compact habit perfect for smaller gardens and containerised growing. Ultimate height and spread: 1-1.5m.
  • Callistemon 'Inferno' - A new variety offering three seasons of interest! Stiff evergreen foliage brightens up dull winter days before bursting into deep-red bottlebrush flowers in late spring and summer followed by glowing orange foliage in autumn. Excellent winter hardiness compared to other varieties. Ultimate height: 120cm (47in). Ultimate spread: 75cm (29in).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Plant Callistemon in a sheltered position in moist, well drained, non-alkaline soil in full sun. This callistemon is suitable for growing outdoors in mild areas and coastal gardens and is hardy down to 5°C (41°F). In colder gardens, it is best grown in a cool conservatory or planted in a patio container that can be moved to a warm position over winter.
More Info
Lightly prune bottlebrush shrubs in autumn after flowering. Reduce the stems to fit the available space, and remove any damaged, crossing or wayward stems. If necessary, callistemon plants will tolerate occasional hard regenerative pruning. Deadhead faded bottlebrush flowers regularly to prolong their display.
