Description

The classic Californian poppy but in a special shade of lilac-purple with paler centres. Waving gently in the breeze, the silky flowers of Californian Poppy ‘Purple Gleam’ shimmer beautifully in the sunshine above low mounds of finely divided foliage. So easy to grow – just scatter seeds onto finely raked soil – the poorer the better. Sow them in big drifts for an informal ‘wildflower’ effect or scatter them along the front of pastel-themed borders. Seeds sown in the autumn will be the earliest to flower, filling the gap between early spring bulbs and the start of the main summer display.  Leave them to self-seed through gravel gardens, paving cracks and the driest, most challenging parts of the garden. Height: 23cm (9"). Spread: 25cm (10").

Sowing

Direct sow eschscholzia seed outdoors where they are to grow from March to May or in September for overwintering. Autumn sowings will flower in late spring. Choose a position in full sun on any poor, well drained soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow seeds thinly, at a depth of 1cm (1/2") in drills spaced 15cm (6") apart and cover seed with its own depth of soil to exclude light. Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes 14-21 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 15cm (6") apart.

Alternatively, sow California poppies indoors from February to March at a temperature of 15-21C (60-70F). When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors.

More Info
Gradually acclimatise eschscholzia plants to outdoor conditions when all risk of frost has passed before planting outdoors in any well drained soil in full sun. Water regularly until plants are fully established. Deadhead faded eschscholzia flowers to prevent them from self seeding.

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
