Description

This little-known perennial always excites curiosity, as well as the attentions of bumble bees and honey bees that flock to its large, nectar and pollen-rich flowers. Low rosettes of thistly, woolly leaves give rise to large, pale blue, daisy-like flowers with deep purple centres. The large flowers are up to 8cm across and are carried in dense clusters crowded at the top of short, thick stems, continuing to open in a long succession through late summer,  Native to South Africa, Berkheya ‘ Silver Spikes’ makes a strong architectural statement for a hot, dry border, exhibiting excellent drought tolerance. Height: 70cm (28in). Spread: 45cm (18in).

Sowing
Sowing Time: February to June or September to October for flowering the following year. Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Cover seed with a light sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Keep at a temperature of between 15-20C (59-68F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 21-30 days but can be erratic.

When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 60-75cm (24-30in) apart. For best results, provide a sunny, sheltered position in fertile, well-drained soil.

How to Grow

Grow in full sun in a dry border that remains well-drained through the winter. After flowering cut down the faded flower stem. Plants will tend to disappear over the winter before re-emerging in the spring, so it is wise to mark their position.
