Description

This dwarf Astilbe is one of the best varieties, providing late summer colour in moist sites and even growing happily as a marginal in a pond or stream where its feet remain permanently wet.

Astilbe chinensis var. pumilla produces compact clumps of fern-like, deeply cut foliage which make a handsome display even before the flowers emerge. In late summer it bears upright, fluffy plumes of rosy-mauve flowers held well above the leaves. Planted en masse it creates a broad brush of gloriously hazy colour. The flower plumes persist as buff seed heads, continuing to offer interest throughout the winter.  It’s a great choice for pondside planting in a wildlife garden, attracting plenty of butterflies and although it’s a quick spreader it remains compact enough to be suitable for smaller gardens. The flower plumes are popular with florists and can be used fresh or dried. Winner of an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height: 30cm (12in). Spread: 60cm (24in).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Plant astilbes in sun or dappled shade. Astilbe plants require rich fertile soil that remains permanently moist, even in the height of summer. A boggy soil next to a pond or stream is ideal. On drier soils, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or compost prior to planting and choose a shaded position.
More Info
Water regularly during hot, dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. Divide over-crowded clumps of astilbe in spring when necessary, to increase their longevity. Apply a mulch around the base of the plant in spring to conserve moisture in the soil.
