Description

The Kew Flowerhouse range of seeds from Thompson and Morgan has been specially created alongside the experts at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to bring the beauty of the garden inside. This outstanding range of handpicked seeds are perfect for enjoying in the garden or in the home. This range includes show-stopping flowers and elegant floral fillers ideal for a bouquet.

Amaranthus caudatus or Love Lies Bleeding is an unusual and eye-catching annual that will bring an exotic feel to any seasonal display. Countless tiny, densely packed rich crimson flowers form long tassels that drip from the branches. Admired by all who see it, this striking plant is perfect for adding height and colour to borders throughout summer and early autumn. The flowers last well after being cut and are great for adding to fresh or dried arrangements.

Culinary note: The leaves are very nutritious and can be cooked like spinach or used as salad greens. The seeds can be treated as a gluten-free grain – Amaranthus flour is common.

Sowing
Sow seed from February to April in pots of moist seed compost. Do not cover the seed. Seal inside a polythene bag at a temperature of 20 to 25C (68 to 77F). During germination, allow the temperature to reduce at night. This will occur naturally if using a heated propagator is avoided. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged. Do not exclude light as this helps germination, which usually takes 3 to 15 days. Once germinated, remove from bag and grow seedlings on in cooler conditions. When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3”) pots and grow on until plants are well-established. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost in a moist, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.
More Info
Feed and water regularly throughout the summer. The cut flowers last well in water and can also be dried.

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
