A rounded, compact variety of Amur Maple, Acer ginnala 'Bailey Compact' has a good, reliable habit coupled with interesting autumnal colouring. This hardy, deciduous shrub is particularly useful as a backdrop plant as its dense growth will form a solid looking screen against which other plants can be shown off. It is also a good choice for a hedging plant too and can be kept clipped back to the shape and height required. Height: 300cm (118"). Spread: 300cm (118").

How to Grow

Grow Acer ginnala trees in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dappled shade. It is quite important to give plants shelter from strong winds which can scorch the leaves. Alternatively grow the Amur Maple in large containers, using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.

Water regularly throughout the growing season until acer trees are well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
