Beans are one of the easiest and most productive crops, and can fit into even small gardens. Many have attractive flowers or coloured pods, making them suitable for growing in flower borders. Get your peas & beans off to a good start by incorporating organic matter or compost into the planting hole, and choose a suitable plant support.
If you’re growing peas, choose ‘Half Pint’, which produces mini plants. Dwarf varieties of French beans, such as ‘Amethyst’, are ideal for containers and ‘Crimson Flowered’ is an ideal broad bean variety. You can even grow runner beans in a pot if you choose ‘Hestia’, a dwarf variety.
Broad bean ‘Aquadulce Claudia’ and Pea ‘Meteor’ will both crop in May from an autumn sowing.
Dwarf bean ‘Dior’, Climbing French Bean ‘Blauhilde’, Broad bean ‘Luz de Otono’ and Pea ‘Eddy’ all have good disease resistance.
