Description

Rarely seen, Xanthoceras sorbifolium, also known as Shinyleaf Yellowhorn, is one of the most beautiful small deciduous trees.

Native to northern China, it has an upright, branching habit clothed in bright green leaves that are composed of small, toothed leaflets and resemble a Mountain Ash. From May to June it bears an abundance of large, fragrant panicles, about 20cm long, consisting of 5-petalled white flowers. The scented, nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to pollinators and an interesting feature is the stain at the base of the flower, which opens yellow and matures to a deep carmine.

In a warm position, Xanthoceras sorbifoliium will go on to produce intriguing walnut-like fruit that resemble those of a Horse Chestnut except that they are held on long stiff stems. The fruit contains numerous pea-sized nuts which are said to be highly nutritious and used as an ingredient in Chinese cuisine. This is a highly unusual and special specimen tree for a warm sunny garden. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height: 2.5-4m (8-13ft). Spread: 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
