This Japanese favourite is easy to grow at home! A staple of sushi, the rhizomes of wasabi are grated to add a fresh, aromatic yet sweet pungency to dressings, sauces and meat or fish dishes. The leaves and flowers of wasabi are also edible, with a milder, fresh taste compared to the spicy, hot rhizome. Leaves and stems can be finely chopped to make a quick, milder version of wasabi paste. In March-April, the plants will produce clusters of delicately scented white flowers; these can be added to salads or fried in tempura batter for a Japanese delicacy you can't buy in the shops.
Preferring a shaded, damp spot that doesn't get too hot, wasabi can be grown at the edge of a pond or even in containers. Hardy to -5C, plants can be brought under cover or covered with leaves for the winter, when they will drop their own leaves. Harvest April-Oct. Height and spread: 40cm (16in).

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
