Direct sow swede seeds outdoors from May to June. Grow Swedes in a weed free, sunny position in non-alkaline, light, fertile, well drained soil that has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow swede seeds thinly at a depth of 1cm (½") in drills 30cm (12") apart. Germination will usually take 7-10 days. When large enough to handle, thin out the seedlings within each row to 23cm (9") apart.
Water swede regularly, particularly during dry periods to prevent skins from splitting. Hoe between rows to reduce weed growth. Swedes require a long growing season and will not mature until the autumn. Harvest swede from October to December, lifting individual swede as and when required. At the end of the year, any remaining roots should be lifted to prevent them becoming woody and stored in damp peat for winter use.
