Description

Early Everbearer

Strawberry ‘Malling Opal’ has proved to be one of the best ever-bearers. Early to start cropping, it produces sweet, soft fruits from early August to September. Plants are vigorous with moderate resistance to Powdery Mildew and Botrytis. Great for small gardens, these space-saving strawberries can easily be grown in patio containers, growbags and even large hanging baskets. In larger gardens, where you can offer the protection of a cloche/polytunnel or greenhouse, the cropping times can be extended even further, offering the tantalising promise of fresh strawberries for Christmas!

Height: 20cm (8"). Spread: 30cm (12").

Estimated time to cropping once planted: 4-8 months.
Estimated time to best yields: 16-20 months.

How to Grow

Your bare roots should be planted at the earliest opportunity following delivery whilst the plants are still dormant.

Plant strawberry plants in autumn or late spring in a sheltered, sunny position in well manured, free draining soil. Plant strawberry plants every 45cm (18”) in rows spaced at 75cm (30”) apart. Avoid planting them too deeply as this may cause them to rot. Alternatively try growing strawberry plants in hanging baskets or in specially designed strawberry planters for the patio.

More Info

Water strawberries frequently throughout the growing season and weed regularly between rows. When growing strawberry plants in baskets and containers, they will also need feeding every two weeks.

From early summer, remove any runners that are produced as these will weaken the plants vigour. Protect the developing fruit from slugs and snails by spreading straw around each plant. Positioning a net over the plants will also prevent crop damage by birds. The netting and straw can be removed after cropping to allow better air flow around the crown of the plant. Mulch strawberry plants with well rotted manure in spring.

Although strawberry plants will continue to fruit in successive years, the crop will become considerably reduced and it is advisable to completely replace strawberry plants every 3 years.

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
