Sowing

Sow Salpiglossis seed from late winter to mid spring on the surface of a good seed compost and gently firm down. Cover the seed with a light dusting of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 18-25C (64-77F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the soil damp but not wet. Do not exclude light as this aids germination which usually takes 14-30 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. Pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage branching and form a bushier plant which will produce more flowers later on. When salpiglossis plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors in sheltered position in full sun on moist, fertile, well drained soil at a distance of 30cm (12") apart.

More Info
Feed and water salpiglossis plants regularly, particularly during hot, dry periods. If necessary, stake the stems with garden canes or twiggy brushwood. Regular deadheading of salpiglossis flowers will encourage further blooms to be produced throughout the summer.
