The best trailing perennials for pots have attractive foliage and eye-catching blooms. Sedum sieboldii 'Mediovariegatum' has both an easy growth habit and lovely bi-coloured fleshy leaves that become edged in pink as the year progresses. In autumn, tiny clusters of star shaped flowers attract bees and butterflies.
The velvety blooms of cosmos atrosanguineus 'Chocamocha' smell just like chocolate. Lean in close to enjoy the smell of these blooms. For a powerful scent that carries on the breeze, grow peonies in pots in a sheltered spot out of the wind. Or philadelphus 'Little White Love' which is covered in powerfully scented white blooms in early summer. Dianthus is a great sweet scented option for a small pot display.
Evergreen perennial plants are perfect for those wanting a more low maintenance display. They also keep interest up during the winter months when deciduous plants lose their leaves or die back completely. Plant a mangave in a full sun spot where the drought tolerant succulent spears are at their architectural best.
Agapanthus are best grown in pots. Try the award winning agapanthus ‘Black Jack’, it’s a deep purple agapanthus with large blooms and sprays of florets that show a repeat flowering towards the end of summer. Agapanthus like to be tight in a pot and perform best when their roots are gently restricted.
Choose drought tolerant plants for your containers in full sun. Lavender is a delightful mediterranean herb with aromatic flowers and leaves. They’re at their best in a sun drenched position and look best in a terracotta pot. Rub the leaves between thumb and forefinger every time you pass.
