From early summer to early autumn, Monarda didyma bears distinctive whorls of bright scarlet blooms, each one composed of 2-lipped, tubular flowers. The shaggy flowers are held on erect stems above clumps of deep green, aromatic foliage. Monarda didyma is a great choice for wildlife lovers, as it’s a magnet for bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects. It has a wild, informal look that is perfect for cottage gardens and prairie plantings, associating particularly well with grasses. It enjoys reliably moist soils. Height: 90 cm (36"). Spread: 45cm (18").
Culinary note: Use the dried leaves to make Bergamot tea or use the sweet, spicy flavoured petals to enhance salads, jellies, rice or pasta dishes. For more details about edible flowers click here.
