Description
This magnificent Magnolia is large and conical in shape, producing lemon-yellow, goblet-shaped flowers in late spring, just as the leaves emerge. The foliage is dark green in colour and contrasts well with the flowers, fading to yellowy brown in autumn. Magnolia x brooklynensis 'Yellow Bird' will tolerate sun and part shade if grown in a neutral to acidic soil in a sheltered position. Height: 5m (16'). Spread: 3m (10'). Please note: When grown as a patio standard, the height and spread will be much smaller, reaching around 1.8m (6').

Culinary note: The young flowers, once separated, can be pickled and then used either on their own as a treat or in salads. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Plant magnolias in a sunny or semi shaded position with protection from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a rich, moist, well drained, acid to neutral soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Magnolia plants establish quicker when their roots are shaded. Following planting, apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant.
When growing magnolia in a patio container use a blend of ericaceous compost mixed with John Innes No. 3.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

More Info
Water regularly throughout the growing season. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted bark chips or garden compost to the base of the plant. Magnolias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape and remove damaged stems or crossing stems.
