Magnolia liliiflora is distinguished by the exquisite form of its lily-like flowers. As the blooms open, the central tepals stand erect like a slender tulip vase, gently spreading as they age. The pink petals have darker pink or purple backs and their perfect silhouette is set against a background of emerging new leaves in spring. It makes a divine show, so it is unsurprising that Magnolia liliiflora was traditionally grown in Chinese and Japanese temple gardens. Flowering April to May, the blooms have the advantage of normally avoiding the worst of the frosts.
Perfect for small gardens, Magnolia liliiflora is one of the smallest magnolias, forming a slow-growing, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub. Height and spread: 3m (10ft).
Show Codes
1 Bare Root Plant (Standard - 1-1.5m tall) (KF8376)
2 Bare Root Plants (Standard 1-1.5m tall) (KF8377)
Bare roots should be planted at the earliest opportunity following delivery.
Plant in a sunny or semi shaded position that recieves a minimum of 4-6 hours of sunshine per day and is sheltered from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Suitable for acid soils only that are rich, moist and well-drained. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Magnolia plants establish quicker when their roots are shaded. Following planting, apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant. When growing in a patio container use a blend of ericaceous compost mixed with John Innes No. 3.
Water regularly throughout the growing season until fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted bark chips or garden compost to the base of the plant. Fertilise once a year in the spring with a slow release tree and shrub fertiliser.
Protect from cold winds and hard frosts which can cause foliar damage.
Plants in pots will be at increased risk of the root ball becoming completely frozen and should be moved into a sheltered location, conservatory or cool greenhouse over winter.
Tolerates pruning well. The best time to prune is after blooming. Remove old or diseased wood and trim to shape.
