If you’re mad about Magnolias, ‘Blue Baby’ is sure to get your pulse racing! Extraordinary blue buds against fresh green foliage make this variety a unique and striking specimen, not just amongst Magnolias, but the whole plant world.
This deciduous Magnolia forms a large upright shrub or small tree clothed in bright green, glossy leaves. From late May, around the same time as the leaves emerge, it bears slender blue buds with yellow inner petals. The petals remain standing upright, forming an elegantly fluted bloom,
A smaller version of ‘Blue Opal’, Magnolia ‘Blue Baby’ is better suited to smaller gardens. Later to flower than other Magnolias, it is much less susceptible to late frosts and being a cultivar of Magnolia acuminata, it is also one of the cold-hardiest. Height: 3-5m (10-16.4ft). Spread: 2-3m (6.5 -9.8ft).
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

2 Bare Root Plants (Grafted Standard) (KH0899)
Bare roots should be planted at the earliest opportunity following delivery.
Plant in a sunny or semi shaded position that recieves a minimum of 4-6 hours of sunshine per day and is sheltered from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Suitable for acid soils only that are rich, moist and well-drained. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Magnolia plants establish quicker when their roots are shaded. Following planting, apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant. When growing in a patio container use a blend of ericaceous compost mixed with John Innes No. 3.
Water regularly throughout the growing season until fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted bark chips or garden compost to the base of the plant. Fertilise once a year in the spring with a slow release tree and shrub fertiliser.
Protect from cold winds and hard frosts which can cause foliar damage.
Plants in pots will be at increased risk of the root ball becoming completely frozen and should be moved into a sheltered location, conservatory or cool greenhouse over winter.
Tolerates pruning well. The best time to prune is after blooming. Remove old or diseased wood and trim to shape.
